June 2009: Basil Hetzel (a Fellow of NSA) wins the Pollin Prize for Pediatrics

To quote the citation for this prestigious award: “His pioneering work led to our understanding of the effects of iodine deficiency on brain development ….. Dr. Hetzel's efforts have prevented brain damage in millions of children. We honor his vision, leadership and discovery.” Basil is the seventh winner – and the first non-American.

June 2009: Peter Hartmann (a Fellow of NSA) wins the Rank Prize for Nutrition

Peter’s work has contributed strongly to our understanding of human lactation. One of his most creative contributions (in collaboration with computing expert Robyn Owens) was a sophisticated non-invasive technique for estimating the rate of emptying the breast as the baby feeds. For this – and a whole suite of related work – Peter has shared this prestigious prize with Robyn. See the story at
