NSA Scholarship to Attend the OceaniaFoods Training Course -
Congratulations to Jaci Barrett
Earlier this year, the NSA advertised a scholarship for a student to attend the OCEANIAFOODS training course in food composition databases being held in Sydney next February. A large number of excellent applications was received. The judging panel had the very challenging task of selecting a winner. NSA has decided to award the scholarship to Jaci Barrett, a PhD student at Monash University, who is researching the role of FODMAPS in gastrointestinal disorders. Congratulations, Jaci and we look forward to hearing from you about the course at one of our NSA meetings next year.
NHMRC Dietary Guidelines Review – Update
The NHMRC has launched a webpage for this review at www.nhmrc.gov.au/your_health/healthy/nutrition/review.htm
They are conducting an online survey of users of the guidelines – so please register at the site to be able to contribute to this. They are also seeking input to the literature review for the update: please contact dietaryguidelines@nhmrc.gov.au by 31 October 2008 to let them know of relevant published or unpublished scientific literature.
Well-Earned Award for Two Adelaide NSA Members
Dr Alison Coates from the University of South Australia and Secretary of the Adelaide Group and Dr Megan Mitchell from the University of Adelaide and Adelaide committee member were both awarded the prestigious 2008 Young Tall Poppy Science Award. This program identifies and acknowledges outstanding young Australian researchers, who are then engaged in an education program to foster a stronger interest in science in schools and the broader community.
Stewart Truswell Turns 80
Emeritus Professor Stewart Truswell, AO (I haven’t space to list all the other postnominals!) has been one of the key international figures in nutrition for many years. Since qualifying in medicine in the early 1950s, he has had a distinguished career in nutrition research and teaching in South Africa, England and Australia, including holding the Chair of Human Nutrition at Sydney University from 1978-1995. He is still actively working at the University of Sydney (and their website features a photo of him at www.medfac.usyd.edu.au/people/academics/profiles/atruswel.php). On August 15, a celebration was held to mark his 80th birthday. About 150 friends/colleagues came, several speeches were given to mark the occasion, and the Governor unveiled a portrait of Stewart.
