Honorary Membership
- Council shall have power to elect up to a total of 10 Honorary members; a majority of three-quarters of the eligible voting members of Council (excluding the Hon Editor) is needed for an affirmative decision.
- The criterion for the award of Honorary Member shall be that the candidate has rendered eminent service to the Society.
- The candidate must be a financial member of the Society
- Nominations for the award may be made by Council or by Regional Group Committees. The nomination should be accompanied by appropriate documentation (about half a page documenting the eminent service rendered to the Society. Nominations must reach the NSA Secratariat by 31 July.
- No more than one award may be made in any one year. The appropriate announcement shall be made at the Annual General Meeting of the Society and the presentation of the Certificate of Honorary Membership of the Society shall be made by the President of the Society at a session of the Scientific Meeting.
Fellowship of the Society
- Council shall have power to elect Fellows of the Society as required; a majority of three-quarters of the eligible voting members of Council (excluding the Hon. Editor) is needed for an affirmative decision.
- The criterion for election shall be that the candidate has made contributions of special merit to the scientific study of nutrition and/or its applications to people and animals.
- Nominations for the award may be made by Council or by Group Committees. The nomination should be accompanied by appropriate documentation (about one page documenting the basis for the nomination together with the nominee’s brief curriculum vitae and list of publications) and submitted to Council for consideration for election to Fellow of the Society.
- Nominations must be submitted to the NSA Secretariat by 31 July.
- A candidate must be a financial member of the Society.
- The appropriate announcement shall be made at the Annual General Meeting of the Society and the presentation of the Certificate of Fellowship of the Society shall be made by the President of the Society at a session of the Scientific Meeting.
NSA Medal
- The NSA Medal shall be awarded to:
- Australian nutrition scientists with an outstanding track record in the field of animal or human nutrition with the work carried out predominantly in Australia (permanent residents are eligible to apply) and who are currently highly active in his/her field of endeavour.
- A person who has been a financial member of NSA for at least 5 years.
- The medallist will:
- Be expected to present a lecture on his or her chosen field of research/endeavour and shall be given special listing in the Proceedings.
- Receive an engraved medal, Annual Meeting travel and registration costs up to a specified limit.
- Names of previous medallists are to be published in each issue of the Proceedings.
- Nominations
- The Secretary shall call for nominations for the Medal each January via the website and group chairs. Nominations must be made by a member of the Society, and should be seconded by another member.
- Nominations must include the full name and address of the applicant and a citation of not more than 200 words. A CV and short list of recent and significant publications are to be attached to the nomination.
- The Award shall be determined by Council assisted by the Awards Committee of Council (see below).
- Nominations must be submitted to the NSA Secretariat by 31 July. New nominations will be acknowledged and the proposers advised of the Annual Meetings for which presentation of the Medal to the nominee will be considered.
- Nominees will be considered for presentation of the award for a period not exceeding three consecutive Annual Meetings. Nominees become ineligible if they have meanwhile received the award or allowed their membership to lapse.
- The Secretary shall advise the successful medal candidates of their awards and notify the proposers of the successful nominations.
NSA Research Award
- The Research Award is intended to encourage excellence in any area of nutrition consistent with the aims of the NSA and to provide assistance in the development of researchers in the early years of their careers.
- The Research Award will also consider contributions to the activities of the Nutrition Society.
- The Research Award will be offered annually but only if nominees are of sufficient merit.
- The Research Award can only be awarded once to any individual.
- Nominations
- Nominees must be graduates (with no more than the equivalent of fifteen full time years post graduation from their first degree) of a university or a similar institution.
- Nominees must be current financial members with at least five year membership of the NSA.
- The Secretary will call for nominations via the electronic bulletin and website from individual members or the Regional Groups some nine months prior to the Annual Scientific Meeting. Nominations must be submitted to the NSA Secretariat by 31 July.
- Nominations must include:
- nominator and seconder (each to provide a brief statement on the impact of the nominee’s work)
- curriculum vitae
- summary of research work (including reprints of no more than three publications)
- nominee’s statement about the impact of his/her work on the relevant area of nutrition
- name, address, phone and fax numbers and email of a referee (the opinion of the latter will only be sought on the advice of the selection panel)
- statement by the nominee of his/her availability to attend and present at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- Selection Panel
- The selection panel will be a sub-committee of Council comprising the Vice-President (chair), Honorary Editor and three members of the Editorial Board.
- All correspondence associated with this award will be handled by the Hon Secretary.
- The Selection Panel must advise Council of their decision at the first meeting of Council in the calendar year of the award, some six months prior to the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- The successful nominee will be advised five months prior to the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- The Award will consist of a framed certificate, return advance purchase airfare, registration and conference dinner at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- The Recipient:
- Must submit a 1 page paper to the Hon Editor by the end of August for incorporation in the Proceedings and can be invited to submit an 8 page paper for inclusion on the website.
- Must attend the Annual Scientific Meeting to receive the Award.
- Must present the paper in a plenary session at the Annual Scientific Meeting
- Must be able to speak at Regional Group seminar at the invitation of individual regional groups – expenses to be provided by the inviting group.
NSA Mid-Career Travel Grant for Research Excellence in Nutrition Science

~ was awarded your PhD 5-15 years ago, and
~ since January 2009, has published, or had accepted for publication, a nutrition research paper in a high quality journal…
we encourage you to apply for one of these two mid-career grants, to support your attending an international nutrition conference in 2010/ 2011. The prize is $2,000 to help cover costs of registration at an international nutrition conference and/or associated airfare and accommodation costs.

NSA is offering a scholarship to enable one health science student who is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to attend our national conference (ASM) in Perth, 29 November - 3 December. Applicants may be undergraduates or postgraduates, doing nutrition-related study. The award includes free registration to the ASM, return airfare (discounted economy) to Perth, accommodation for duration of the conference, and complimentary NSA membership for 2010/2011.

NSA Early-Career Travel Grants (two available)

Apply NOW for one of our two $2,000 travel grants towards to the costs of travel, accommodation and registration for an international nutrition conference. An expert NSA committee will select the best two papers based on their research quality, the journal's quality, and the paper's potential contribution to nutrition

Nestlé Nutrition Institute Emerging Researcher Award
Aim: To encourage first-author original research publications by NSA postgraduate student members in international journals, in the area of nutritional sciences.
Target Group: NSA postgraduate student members
Eligibility/Selection Process:
- The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time or part-time postgraduate student.
- The applicant must be a paid financial member of NSA at the time of application.
- Only applicants who are first authors who have had an original research paper published up to 12 months prior to the closing date of applications will be considered. Only published (not submitted or accepted) publications will be accepted.
- The papers will be assessed via a ranking system against the following criteria:
- Research quality
- Impact factor of the journal in which the paper is published.
- Potential contribution to improvement of health.
- The assessment panel will consist of the NSA President, President-Elect, Honorary Editor, a NSA member nominated by Council and up to two NSA Fellows.
- The successful candidate must give a 15-minute oral presentation of their research area at the NSA ASM in the year the award is offered.
- Applications will not be considered from students who have previously won this award or an NSA Early Career Scholarship to Attend International Conferences
Award Prize:
- A certificate
- A $1,000 cheque
- Complimentary registration to the NSA Annual Scientific Meeting in the year the award is offered.
Application Procedure:
- Write a one page letter of application stating why your chosen paper is important in terms of nutrition research and how it is distinguished as high quality research
- Provide a brief, two page CV
- Submit a copy of the paper as a PDF

Awards Committee
- The Awards Committee shall be a Sub-Committee of Council and be composed of the President with either the Past-President or President-Elect, depending on which of those positions is for the time being occupied, and three members of the Society nominated and elected by Council for their distinguished contributions to nutrition science.
- The Secretary of the Society shall be a non-voting member of the Awards Committee.
- The President of the Society shall be the Chairperson of the Awards Committee.
- The Awards Committee shall periodically review the structure and terms of reference of the awards.
- The Awards Committee shall ensure that sufficient and appropriate nominations are received from the membership of the Society.
- The Awards Committee after consultation shall recommend, for Council's approval, the recipients of the awards and fellowships. These recommendations shall, if necessary, be the outcome of a ballot.
- The Awards Committee, when required, may co-opt up to two members of the Society to act as non-voting members of the Awards Committee to advise the Committee in specialised areas of nutrition science.
- The term of office of each of the three non-Executive members of the Awards Committee shall be four years in a staggered rotation.
- To initiate the staggered rotation, these members will be appointed, in the first instance, for a term of one, two or three years.
