Symposium on Cutting Edge Developments in Nutrition

Report on a Melbourne Group Seminar on 19 March 2009

This six-speaker activity was well attended (over 25 senior researchers and PhD students). The talks included an overview of nanotechnology and applications for the food industry (Dr Tak Tsuzuki), the state of aquaculture in the world & difficulties in maintaining adequate quality feed ingredients (Dr Giovanni Turchini), a presentation of how different vegetable oils can prolong or shorten lifespan in a particular strain of rats & presentation of a plan to uncover the mechanism of action (Dr Paul Lewandowski), a talk on omega 3 fatty acids by an expert in biotechnology & commercial plant processing (Prof Colin Barrow). Following this, two PhD students gave a short seminar: Ms Gunveen Kaur on metabolism of long chain omega 3 PUFA in rats & Mr Mile Janevski on the role of cocoa extracts in preventing fatty liver. Dr Paul Lewandoweski and the two PhD students are thanked for organizing the event at Geelong and the excellent catering. The Victorian group is planning to hold other regional activities in 2009.
