Sarcopenia in Older Age, Chronic Disease and Obesity: Implications for Healthcare

WHEN: Monday 7 December 2009

WHERE: Conservatorium Concert Hall, Newcastle, New South Wales

As the population ages, the amount of chronic disease in the community increases. In addition, the population is getting more obese and this cohort of obese people is moving into older age. These three issues of older age, chronic disease and obesity are causative for, and linked closely with, muscle loss and weakness known as sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia has been recognised as one of the top 5 major health risks facing the US population but has received far less attention in Australia. This one-day symposium brings together experts from around Australia to further our understanding of the challenges associated with sarcopenia in ageing, chronic disease and obesity and the need for health professionals, particularly dietitians, and those in the exercise-related health areas, to work together to address this problem.
